Depression Is A Disorder Harder Than Any Metaphor

Depression is a disorder harder than any metaphor

Depression is one of the most interesting mental disorders for metaphors. It is as if it leads us irreparably to sadness, sadness then carrying us towards a sea. Or, rather, towards a deep and dark well which would have only one distant exit door. Depression is somewhat reminiscent of the invisible chains that imprison us.

They are because they muzzle us with their weight and not with their tension, because they feed on melancholy and not on oil. Their power is to make us believe that we are small, clumsy and incompetent.

Depression from the outside

Those who see the depressed person from the outside come to think that they understand them. Yes, they think so. They say they also felt sad and went through times when they couldn’t see a way out. From this memory, they have the feeling that patience is a weapon whose value we underestimate, that time continues to pass even with sadness and even if everything seems still and unimportant around us.

So  those who think they understand the person don’t hesitate to motivate them because they see the same pattern on their face that they once experienced. However, depression is more than a week of sadness or grieving that is ingrained in us. Depression is a disorder that requires professional intervention  and, in reality,  few metaphors reflect its harshness.

It is not only a dark tunnel with no exit, it is also a tunnel in which there is a lack of air and where one cannot breathe. A space where the person cannot move and feels guilty. It is a situation in which the powerlessness of “wanting” and “not being able” reigns. A place where questions bite and everything outside the question is seen as a threat.

A place where courage is tarnished and where the eyes are protected by a glass of tears that do not always come out. A window that magnifies the negative and becomes opaque in the face of opportunities. In the end, we are talking about a place where motivation is needed but where the tools and emotional faculties are even more so.

Depression makes victims guilty

A person with depression is not just a sad person. In fact,  she doesn’t always seem sad. Even if it is the emotion that stands out the most in the stereotype, it is not always the one that predominates. Very often, and especially in children, one thing happens and many people ignore it:  this sadness turns into anger. This also happens in adults because even if they have more emotional regulation tools, there will always be this struggle and this feeling of frustration because the results don’t come.

Yes, angry. Anger sticking to those around them who are trying to help, numbing any empathy. This face of depression, which is not easily recognizable, drives away those who try to help and who are tired of giving advice, easy and useful solutions for them, but which the other does not follow.

This is when the person with depression can stop being a victim and become the culprit. So even though she continues to suffer, others may believe that the position she finds herself in is very convenient: she doesn’t work, she doesn’t do anything at home, and she spends her days resting. To rest from what? If she does nothing …

As we have seen, depression is a much more complex disorder than an emotion. This is a profound evil in the face of which all the support in the world is needed,  but support well controlled, with intelligence. If this is not the case, the force of this support may push the person even further.

This is why there are good professionals and why friends are necessary, but not enough. You may have the feeling that the depressed person is like an empty bag for advice. If we want to help, don’t underestimate this trouble, don’t turn it into metaphors because we run the great danger of writing them incomplete; it will translate into how we help, and it doesn’t matter if we act with the best intention in the world.
