Being like bamboo: time, strength and flexibility

To be like bamboo involves bringing us closer to a thousand-year-old wisdom inscribed in nature.  It means understanding that internal healing takes time and patience. And no matter how hard the wind or the storm hits us. Why ? Because we have learned to be flexible and, above all, resilient.

There is probably no plant more fascinating and full of mysticism than bamboo. There are around 1,500 species and some can reach 40 meters in height. A variety of bamboo features flowers that germinate once every 120 years. What’s more, it is known to release a high level of oxygen into the atmosphere and absorb more carbon dioxide than many other plants.

Its growth, resistance and beneficial power for the planet have made this plant a reference in terms of inspiration for multiple philosophical, spiritual and psychological practices. Bamboo is said to contain a secret code,  a unique formula that nature gave it to transform it into a species as beautiful as it is resistant.

In China, for example, this plant is part of what is known as the  Four Nobles.  These are the most special and symbolic species of this culture: we find the plum, the orchid, the bamboo and the chrysanthemum. Each of them represents a season. Bamboo is said to contain the strength, vigor and beauty of summer.

Bamboo retains the power of triumph in its seeds. When he manages to touch the sky, it doesn’t matter if misfortune befalls him and if someone cuts him off. It will push again to stroke the peaks.

Being like bamboo, the key to happiness

Nature is often our best inspiration.  If the Egyptians erected much of their cosmogony by observing the stars, their movements, their changes and their mysteries, perhaps it is time to turn our gaze to nature to bring us closer to the true meaning of happiness.

Being like bamboo involves taking an example from its characteristics. These are the ones that can help us develop two essential dimensions to overcome any difficulty: of course we are talking about resistance and flexibility. Let’s see in detail all the exceptional virtues of this wonder of nature.

Have time and patience

Let’s face it: in this society we are allergic to patience. We have become accustomed to immediacy, to this notification that alerts us to a message or news that has already been around the world in less than a minute. We are also those people who see their doctor for a cold or the flu and ask for antibiotics. Why? Because we want to heal quickly, as soon as possible.

We want quick solutions, sometimes forgetting that the body needs time to recover, to regain its vitality at such a demanding time.

Being like bamboo involves investing in patience. This means remembering that this plant takes about seven years to germinate. She needs time to work on her “internal self”. It conditions its roots, absorbs nutrients and prepares itself. So once it emerges from the ground to see the light, nothing stops its growth. She is unstoppable and magnificent; it can sometimes even grow a meter in a day.

Have the right to grow up

We often hear it said that  we ourselves mark our own limits. Obviously, it is not always possible to avoid certain dimensions or achieve certain objectives. Our society has barriers and filters that often limit our dreams.

To be like bamboo means to remember that we have the right to grow and evolve. Even though enemies or events may block this personal ascension, we must not forget the vastness of the sky and its range of possibilities, in addition to our potential to move forward and grow over time.

Be flexible and resistant in the face of adversity

Bamboo can be in a group or stand alone. It can grow in different places on the planet. Reach 20 or 40 meters in height ,. Form very dense forests. Or hoist itself in the form of a column with a diameter that can reach one meter. Whatever its growth or disposition, one thing never changes: its strength and flexibility.

  • We also know that they have withstood large-scale earthquakes. What’s more,  it doesn’t matter if they are cut: being like bamboo involves being able to regenerate, heal, and grow again with greater and unstoppable strength.
  • These seven years of growing underground by developing its roots and firmly securing its body make the miracle of this exceptional plant possible.

To be like bamboo means to have a resilient attitude to life. Sometimes we have to come to terms with the fact that adversity overtakes us. However, when we adopt a strong attitude, we return to our original position with more grandeur. More beauty. And incomparable righteousness.
